The Tegeler Vari Tube Recording Channel is a complete analogue recording channel designed to bring boutique console-style tone, control and polish to vocals, instruments and line-level sources. Combining a flexible tube microphone preamp, passive Pultec-style equalizer, optical compressor and Vari-Mu compressor in a single 3U rackmount unit, it gives you a powerful front end for recording, mixing and analogue tone shaping.
The microphone preamp is built to offer a wide tonal range, from clean and direct through to thicker, more vintage-inspired character. With transformer-balanced inputs and output, a Class-A tube circuit and three triodes in the signal path, the VTRC adds depth, presence and harmonic richness before the signal even reaches the EQ or compressor stages. True 48V phantom power, phase reverse and a high-impedance instrument input make it suitable for microphones, guitars, basses, synths and other studio sources.
The EQ section is based on the classic passive Pultec principle, giving you smooth, musical tone shaping rather than harsh surgical correction. The low-cut filter helps remove unwanted rumble, the low-mid boost can add weight and body, the mid-cut section can clean up boxiness or harshness, and the high boost provides everything from presence and clarity to open, airy top-end lift. With high boost frequencies extending up to 24 kHz, it is particularly useful for adding polish and air to vocals and acoustic instruments.
For dynamics, the Vari Tube Recording Channel offers both optical compression and Vari-Mu-style tube compression, which can be used individually or together. The optical compressor provides smooth, open levelling that keeps performances steady while preserving natural movement and microdynamics. The Vari-Mu compressor adds more tone, density and forward character, helping sources sit confidently in a dense mix without losing warmth.
The routing options make the VTRC especially flexible. The EQ can be placed before or after the compressor, or switched into the compressor side-chain for frequency-conscious compression and de-essing-style control. A dedicated line input with its own transformer also allows the VTRC to process already-recorded tracks, stems or high-level sources during mixing, so the full preamp, EQ and compressor chain can be used beyond the initial recording stage.
For stereo work, two Vari Tube Recording Channels can be linked together, making it possible to process stereo instruments or buses with matched dynamic behaviour. Stepped potentiometers help with repeatability, while the internal toroidal power supply and 3U rackmount construction make it a serious centrepiece for professional tracking and hybrid studio workflows.
Whether used as a vocal recording chain, instrument DI, line-level processor, analogue sweetening path or complete front end for a project studio, the Tegeler Vari Tube Recording Channel delivers premium tube tone, musical EQ and flexible compression in one elegant channel strip.
