The Tegeler Vocal Leveler 500 is a compact optical compressor designed to make dynamic control quick, musical and easy. Built for the API 500-series format, it brings the opto compressor circuit from Tegeler’s Vari Tube Recording Channel into a smaller module, giving you smooth analogue compression with the unmistakable Tegeler character.
As the name suggests, the Vocal Leveler 500 is ideal for vocals. It helps even out performance dynamics, keeps a vocal sitting confidently in the mix, and controls peaks without making the compression feel heavy-handed. The optical compression behaviour is soft, natural and forgiving, making it especially useful when you want a source to sound controlled without losing its movement, tone or expression.
The signal path combines an input transformer, opto compressor and FET stage, giving the Vocal Leveler 500 more than simple level control. Tegeler’s in-house transformer adds harmonic saturation and solidity at the input, while the FET stage provides warm, tube-like refinement at the end of the circuit. The result is a compressor that can sound clean and subtle, but still adds a pleasing analogue weight and polish to the source.
Operation is deliberately straightforward. With just two main controls — Gain Reduction and Output — the Vocal Leveler 500 lets you get to a usable sound quickly without spending time navigating complex settings. A three-position timing switch allows you to choose between fast, auto and slow attack/release behaviour, making it easy to adapt the compressor to different sources and recording or mixing situations.
Although designed with vocals in mind, the Vocal Leveler 500 is far more versatile than its name suggests. Bass, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, synths and other dynamic sources can all benefit from its smooth, unobtrusive compression. It can also be used while recording to help protect against unexpected peaks, controlling the signal before it reaches your converter while preserving the character and microdynamics of the performance.
For stereo use, two Vocal Leveler 500 modules can be linked together, making them useful on stereo instruments, buses and wider mix elements. Stepped potentiometers make settings easier to recall, which is particularly useful in professional studio workflows where repeatability matters.
Simple, musical and effective, the Tegeler Vocal Leveler 500 is an excellent choice for engineers who want fast analogue compression, vocal polish and smooth dynamic control in a compact 500-series module.
