Zoom H6 Handy Recorder

The Zoom H6 is a portable recorder for sessions that need more than a single microphone perspective. Four main external inputs and an interchangeable stereo capsule connection give it room for interviews, small ensembles, live recordings and sound for picture. Its individual gain controls make it easy to see and adjust the recording setup, while separate tracks preserve choices for the edit. Put a microphone where each source needs it

Four XLR/TRS combination sockets accept external microphone and compatible line sources. This lets you move beyond asking every contributor to share the same recording position. Each interviewee can have a microphone at an appropriate distance, or several instruments can be captured from positions chosen for their sound. Keeping those channels separate makes later adjustments more selective: reduce noise from an unused microphone, bring forward a quiet part or apply different treatment to speech and music. The extra inputs are valuable because they let you solve acoustic problems at the source.

Keep a stereo picture of the performance

The interchangeable capsule system adds a stereo recording perspective to the external channels. For music, a room pair can preserve the relationship between players while close microphones add definition where needed. For location work, it can capture the ambience that helps an edited scene feel continuous. More microphones do not automatically improve a recording, however. Listen to how the close and distant signals combine, and use only the sources that serve the result. A well-placed stereo recording may be all that a simple session needs.

Direct control over conventional recording levels

The original H6 records fixed-point audio at resolutions up to 24-bit/96kHz; it is not a 32-bit float recorder. Individual gain knobs and input pads give you a clear, hands-on way to manage sources of different strengths. Set levels against the loudest expected performance and leave sensible headroom. Phantom-power options support compatible condenser microphones on the main inputs. When receiving a feed from a mixer or another device, check the source level and connection as part of the setup, rather than assuming every jack or XLR feed behaves like a microphone.

Separate recordings make editing more deliberate

Six-channel capture allows the stereo capsule and four main inputs to be recorded together. For a discussion, that can preserve individual voices plus a reference perspective; for a performance, it can combine direct detail with the room. In the edit, you can decide how much ambience the piece needs and how prominently each source should sit. Headphone monitoring during capture is still essential, because separate tracks cannot repair a disconnected cable or a microphone rubbing against clothing. A short test through the actual recording path is time well spent.

A portable system with room to adapt

Four AA batteries support mobile use, and the H6's USB connection extends its usefulness to compatible computer recording workflows. Its original-generation capsule connection supports the appropriate Zoom capsule family; newer Capsule System 3.0 accessories are a different system. Choose the H6 when you want multiple external inputs, tactile control and a portable recording approach that can serve several types of production. It encourages you to capture the material in a form that remains useful when the important decisions move from the location to the edit suite.
