Product overview

The Zoom H3-VR is designed for sound that needs to convey more than left and right. Its four-microphone ambisonic array captures a surrounding soundfield, making it an interesting tool for immersive video, virtual reality, installations and creative sound design. Instead of treating the recorder's stereo orientation as the final listening perspective, an ambisonic workflow gives compatible production software information that can be used to orient and decode the sound later. That makes the H3-VR a compact starting point for exploring spatial audio without assembling a separate microphone and multichannel recorder system.

Capture a soundfield, not just a stereo view

Conventional stereo recording establishes a left-to-right image at capture. Ambisonic recording describes a surrounding field in a form that compatible tools can interpret for different listening arrangements. The H3-VR's four capsules work together for this purpose, so their relationship is part of the system rather than four unrelated microphones. For a busy environment, that can preserve the sense of activity around the listener. For an installation or virtual scene, it can help connect sound to the space being presented visually.

Onboard conversion simplifies the workflow

The recorder converts the microphone array's A-format signals into B-format onboard, reducing a processing step that otherwise needs to be handled after recording. Ambisonic capture supports up to 24-bit/96kHz audio. The six-axis motion sensor detects the recorder's orientation, helping the system account for how it has been positioned. Orientation still deserves deliberate attention on a production: decide how the recorder relates to the camera or scene, keep that relationship documented and listen to a test in the intended playback workflow before a critical shoot.

Stereo and binaural options broaden its uses

Not every project needs an interactive immersive mix. The H3-VR also provides conventional stereo and binaural recording options, with binaural capture available up to 24-bit/48kHz. Binaural listening is intended to create a spatial impression over headphones, which can make it useful for location experiences and headphone-focused content. The result depends on the listening method and material, so it is sensible to evaluate it on the headphones and platform your audience will use. Stereo remains a practical option when the delivery format is more conventional.

Plan the route from location to audience

Spatial recording becomes most useful when capture and delivery are considered together. An ambisonic file needs suitable software and a compatible playback or conversion path; it is not automatically a finished surround soundtrack. Zoom's supporting software provides conversion options, including creating a 5.1 mix after recording. The H3-VR itself is not a direct six-channel 5.1 recorder. For an editor, retaining the spatial recording alongside a simple listening reference can make collaboration easier while preserving the material needed for a more specialised final mix.

Small enough to explore with

The integrated microphone and recorder design keeps the location kit compact, and power from two AA batteries or USB suits mobile and fixed use. An optional BTA-1 adapter enables supported remote-control functions. As with any sensitive microphone array, stable mounting, appropriate wind protection and careful placement make a substantial difference. Choose the H3-VR when you want to learn how environments behave around a listener, gather immersive source material and develop spatial projects with a purpose-built recorder that remains practical to carry.
