Zoom ZSG-1 Camera Shotgun Microphone

The Zoom ZSG-1 is a compact shotgun microphone for cameras and compatible recording devices that provide plug-in power through a 3.5mm microphone input. It gives mobile filmmakers and content creators a more deliberate directional microphone than the one built into a camera body. The supplied shock mount and windscreen support practical location use, while the small format keeps the rig manageable. It is suited to interviews, travel content, documentary scenes and other work where the subject is in front of the camera and the microphone needs to become part of the shooting setup rather than a separate recording system.

Direct the microphone towards the subject

The ZSG-1 uses a supercardioid pickup pattern to focus on the intended direction and reduce sensitivity in other areas. This can help the subject stand out from the surroundings, but it does not make a distant voice sound as though a microphone were placed beside it. Sound level falls with distance, while room reflections and background activity remain part of the scene. For clear dialogue, move the microphone closer whenever the framing and production allow. A directional microphone is most effective when its position and aim support the subject rather than compensate for an unnecessarily distant camera.

Keep the camera's movements out of the soundtrack

The supplied SMM-3 shock mount helps reduce vibration transferred from the camera or support into the microphone. That is useful when operating the rig, but cable placement and handling still matter. Leave the cable relaxed and prevent it from rubbing against the microphone assembly or pulling on the mount. Make a short test while using the camera controls you expect to touch during the shoot. Mechanical sounds can be difficult to remove when they overlap dialogue, so preventing them at the rig is usually more effective than relying on editing afterwards.

Wind protection is part of outdoor recording

The included WSM-3 windscreen helps manage moving air around the microphone. Wind can create strong low-frequency disturbance even when the scene does not sound especially loud to a person standing there. Fit the protection appropriately and listen through the recording device's headphone path if available. Changing the shooting position to gain shelter can also help. A low-cut filter elsewhere in the system may reduce some low-frequency content, but it cannot restore detail lost to severe wind disturbance. Physical protection and sensible positioning remain the most useful starting points.

Check the 3.5mm connection and power requirement

The microphone uses a 3.5mm TRS connection and requires 2–5V plug-in power from the receiving device. That is different from the 48V phantom power used by many XLR microphones. A camera or recorder must provide the correct compatible input for the ZSG-1 to operate as intended. Smartphone use may require an appropriate adapter and a supported recording application; the presence of a similar-looking socket or USB port is not enough to establish compatibility. Test the full connection before a shoot, including whether the device has selected the external microphone.

Zoom specifies a 50Hz–20kHz frequency response and 118dB SPL handling. The supplied 3.5mm cable, shock mount and windscreen help establish the basic camera connection, while the camera or recorder remains responsible for recording and level control. Choose the ZSG-1 when you want a small directional microphone to improve the source sound within a compatible camera setup. It rewards careful aiming, sensible distance and monitored testing with audio that gives the editor a clearer starting point and helps the viewer stay connected to the subject on screen.
