Zoom M3 MicTrak Stereo Shotgun Recorder

The Zoom M3 MicTrak combines a camera-mounted shotgun microphone with its own audio recorder. That is a useful distinction for filmmakers: the microphone can feed the camera while also preserving a separate recording for the edit. Its mid-side design lets you choose a focused mono perspective or a wider stereo image, giving it uses across dialogue-led scenes, documentary work and environmental sound. For a compact production kit, it adds a dedicated audio capture path without requiring a separate recorder to be carried elsewhere on the rig.

Match the perspective to the scene

The M3 offers mono, 90-degree stereo and 120-degree stereo settings. A focused mono perspective can suit a subject directly in front of the camera, while stereo can better convey an environment, a performance or activity across the frame. Wider is not always more useful: in a noisy location, bringing in more surrounding sound can compete with the subject. Think about what the audience needs to hear, then choose the perspective accordingly. The M3's appeal is the ability to make that choice within one compact microphone and recorder system.

Mid-side recording leaves creative room in the edit

Alongside the chosen stereo output, the M3 records mid-side RAW material that can be worked with in a suitable editing workflow. This preserves information that allows stereo width to be reconsidered after the shoot. If an establishing shot benefits from a broad sense of space but a close sequence needs a more focused image, that flexibility can help the soundtrack follow the picture. It is especially useful when the final edit is not yet known on location. Listen in mono as well as stereo when preparing material for different delivery platforms.

A separate 32-bit float recording

The M3 records at 48kHz in 32-bit float, a format well suited to retaining level-adjustment latitude for video production. In compatible software, unexpectedly quiet or loud recorded material can be brought to an appropriate working level. The onboard recording is separate from whatever limitations apply to the camera's own audio input. It still depends on the microphone capturing a clean source: wind, excessive distance and acoustic overload cannot be solved simply by changing file level. A short headphone check is therefore as valuable as it is with a larger recording rig.

Feed the camera and monitor the microphone

Separate line and headphone connections let you send an audio feed to the camera while listening directly to the M3. The camera recording can provide a convenient reference for aligning the separate audio during editing. Set the camera's input appropriately and check both paths before recording an important scene. A clean recorder file is valuable, but a recognisable camera reference makes post-production easier. Monitoring also helps identify mechanical noise from the rig or a cable touching the microphone assembly before it affects a long take.

A practical companion for compact filmmaking

The included shock mount helps isolate the microphone from the camera rig, while two AA batteries or USB power support different shooting arrangements. Remember that a shotgun microphone does not make distance disappear: for clear dialogue, moving closer to the speaker usually helps more than aiming from far away. The M3 is particularly attractive for mobile creators who want directional capture, the option of stereo atmosphere and a dedicated recording to refine later. It brings meaningful audio flexibility to a camera setup without turning every shoot into a large sound department operation.
