Zoom LiveTrak L-20R Digital Mixer and Recorder

The Zoom LiveTrak L-20R brings a large input count and standalone multitrack recording into a rack-oriented system controlled from a compatible iPad. It is suited to bands, rehearsal spaces and installations where the connections can remain in one place while the engineer moves to hear the room. Twenty input channels and separate performer mixes provide the flexibility needed for a fuller ensemble. The rack format changes the way you work: instead of standing at a conventional fader surface, you can make mixing decisions from a listening position that tells you more about what the audience or musicians are hearing.

Keep the connections together and move the controls

The L-20R provides sixteen mono microphone/line inputs and two stereo pairs. The recorder and connections can live in a rack near the stage or rehearsal setup, reducing the need to place a large desktop mixer in the working area. Mixing is handled through the supported iPad control app, so a compatible iPad is part of the operating setup and is not included. The supplied BTA-1 adapter supports that control connection. Plan the tablet, app compatibility and wireless arrangement before the session so that the control surface is as dependable as the wired audio connections.

Give the musicians individual monitoring

Six custom monitor mixes allow performers to hear different balances, with an engineer monitoring path for checking the result. A vocalist can hear more of their own voice while another musician receives a stronger timing reference. These changes need not disturb the audience mix. Moving with the control tablet can make it easier to discuss and adjust a musician's mix from their position. It is still worth checking the complete ensemble together, because the sound from the stage and the monitor feed combine differently once everyone begins playing.

Record the performance for a later mix

The onboard recorder captures up to twenty separate input tracks plus the stereo mix, providing 22 recording tracks at supported settings. This preserves both the live balance and the individual material needed for a more considered production afterwards. A rehearsal can become a useful demo, or a live set can be remixed without relying entirely on the room mix. Set input gain with appropriate headroom because the recorder uses conventional fixed-point formats. Separate tracks provide editing freedom, but they cannot restore a source that was distorted before or during capture.

Match the operating mode to the session

Recording supports up to 24-bit/96kHz, but 96kHz operation restricts functions including EQ, effects, overdubbing, USB audio and custom monitor-fader operation. A band relying on personal monitor mixes and onboard processing will usually want to plan around a supported 44.1kHz or 48kHz workflow. The 22-input, four-output USB interface also operates at those supported lower rates. Checking the mode requirements before the event prevents a headline sample-rate choice from removing a function the musicians actually need during the performance.

A repeatable system for regular work

Scene memories help recall established mixes, while onboard processing and effects support the performance without requiring a separate processor for every task. The supplied rack ears, BTA-1 adapter and power adapter support the intended installation approach. For a regular rehearsal space or portable band rack, the L-20R can keep the audio connections organised while allowing flexible control from the room.
