Zoom H6studio Handy Recorder

The Zoom H6studio gives a small production the freedom to think in individual sound sources. Built-in stereo microphones provide the overall picture, while four external inputs let you place microphones where they will make the greatest difference. That could mean separate voices around a table, a singer and several instruments, or dialogue alongside a stereo atmosphere. For musicians, interviewers and location recordists, it offers a useful step beyond simply recording the room: you can preserve the performance and retain the control needed to shape it afterwards.

A detailed stereo starting point

The detachable XY capsule uses large 19.4mm microphones with a maximum sound pressure level of 140dB SPL. Its stereo arrangement is useful for performances, rehearsals and environmental sound where the relationship between the subject and its surroundings matters. Try positioning the recorder where the performance sounds naturally balanced, then listen on headphones before committing to a take. The built-in microphones can be the entire recording system for a quick session, or a room pair that adds depth to a more closely miked production.

Four external inputs open up the session

The locking XLR/TRS sockets accommodate external microphone and line sources, with phantom power for compatible condenser microphones. F-series preamps give the external inputs a low-noise foundation. More importantly, the four connections let you make deliberate choices about microphone placement. A close vocal microphone can improve intelligibility while a stereo pair captures the room, for example. Recording those sources independently means you can change their balance, process them differently and edit a single part without applying every adjustment to the whole recording.

Choose how you want to handle levels

The H6studio combines dual converters and 32-bit float recording with physical gain controls. Float files offer wide adjustment latitude in compatible software, making them particularly helpful for unpredictable dialogue or performances with large changes in level. Conventional 16-bit and 24-bit formats are also available when you want to work within an established delivery or recording process. Good microphone technique still matters: no file format can remove room echo, clothing rustle or distortion created before the signal reaches the recorder. The benefit is greater flexibility with the sound you have captured well.

Separate tracks for a more considered mix

Six individual input channels can be recorded, with a stereo mix available at supported rates up to 96kHz. The higher 192kHz setting records individual tracks without the stereo mix. Keeping a mix alongside the separate recordings can help with quick listening and reference, while the individual files remain available for detailed editing. For a live acoustic session, you might use the stereo microphones for a believable room image and bring in the close microphones only where a voice or instrument needs more definition.

Useful beyond the location recording

As a six-input, two-output USB audio interface, the H6studio can also connect your microphones to a computer-based recording setup. Separate headphone and line outputs support monitoring and connection to other equipment. Four AA batteries and USB power provide practical options for mobile or fixed work. Its Capsule System 3.0 connection supports compatible current-generation capsules, rather than the older original H6 capsule system. If your sessions regularly involve several contributors, the H6studio gives you room to grow without abandoning the immediacy of a handheld recorder.
