Zoom H6essential Handy Recorder

The Zoom H6essential gives musicians and production teams space for more of the session. Four external microphone inputs sit alongside a detachable stereo microphone capsule, so you can capture several contributors without immediately reaching for a larger recording system. Use it for round-table conversation, small ensemble recording, location interviews or sound gathering where one stereo perspective is not enough. Its strength is the ability to keep sources separate while retaining the convenience of a recorder you can carry between rooms, venues and shooting locations.

Build the recording around the people in it

The four XLR/TRS combination inputs accept external microphones and compatible line sources, with 48V phantom power for suitable condenser microphones. A separate input for each participant makes dialogue easier to manage afterwards: one quiet speaker can be raised without increasing everyone else, and an unused microphone can be reduced when it is picking up background sound. For music, the same principle lets you combine close instrument microphones with a stereo picture of the performance. Six input channels give you options without requiring every session to use them all.

A detachable stereo pair for immediate capture

The supplied XY microphone capsule provides a ready-to-use stereo recording arrangement and handles sound pressure levels up to 135dB SPL. It can capture a whole rehearsal on its own, add room ambience around close microphones, or preserve the wider setting of a documentary scene. Listen while changing the recorder's distance and angle: a small adjustment can change the balance of direct sound and room reflection substantially. The Capsule System 3.0 connection supports compatible current-generation capsules, so capsule compatibility should be checked rather than assumed from the original H6 range.

More latitude for unpredictable performances

The H6essential records 32-bit float audio at sample rates up to 96kHz. This gives compatible editing software considerable freedom to adjust the level of recorded files, which is valuable when a performer moves from a whisper to a shout or a musical passage changes dramatically in volume. It lets you spend more attention on the content and microphone positions. It cannot remove distortion already produced by a microphone or an external device, and it will not cure room echo. The best results still start with a clean source and sensible placement.

Keep the monitoring mix separate from the final decisions

An onboard mixer helps you establish a listening balance while the individual inputs remain available for editing. This is especially useful when several people are speaking and you need to confirm that every microphone is working. Separate headphone and line outputs support monitoring and feeding another device. A practical session might use the line output for a camera reference while the recorder holds the separate audio files for the final edit. Matching picture and sound afterwards is much easier when both recordings have a clear reference.

Portable recording with a second role at the desk

Four AA batteries or USB power let you adapt the H6essential to location or fixed use. Recording to microSD keeps the capture independent of a computer, while six-input, two-output USB interface operation brings the same recording front end into compatible software. Audible menu guidance provides an additional way to navigate the recorder.
