Zoom F6 MultiTrack Field Recorder

The Zoom F6 brings a location-sound workflow into a compact six-input recorder. It is designed for sessions where several microphones need to be captured separately, sound levels can change without warning and the files must fit an organised post-production process. Dialogue, documentary work, small productions and detailed music recording all benefit from that combination. With six external microphone inputs, timecode and a choice of recording formats, the F6 gives a small crew substantial control without making a large recorder the centre of every portable setup.

Six inputs for individual microphone control

The locking XLR inputs accept microphone and line sources, with phantom power available for compatible condenser microphones. The preamps provide up to 75dB of gain and a specified -127dBu equivalent input noise. More importantly for a production, each source can remain on its own track. A boom microphone, several personal microphones and another production feed can be preserved independently, allowing the editor to select the cleanest perspective rather than inherit every decision made in the location mix. Clear track names help those recordings remain useful once they leave the sound recordist.

Choose conventional, float or supported dual-format recording

Dual converters support a wide input range, and 32-bit float recording provides extensive level-adjustment latitude in compatible software. Conventional 16-bit and 24-bit formats are also available, with supported dual-format operation allowing different file requirements to be accommodated. This is useful when a production needs a familiar delivery format alongside material with greater adjustment flexibility. Float recording does not remove distortion from an overloaded wireless receiver, microphone or other upstream device. Checking every stage of the signal path remains essential when external equipment is feeding the recorder.

Keep isolated tracks and a useful production mix

The F6 can record six isolated inputs alongside a stereo mix at supported settings. The individual recordings preserve editing options, while a balanced mix helps the production team review material and work with a convenient reference. Recording rates extend to 192kHz, but the stereo mix is not recorded in that highest-rate mode. Automix can assist with managing multiple spoken sources, and the recorder's processing tools help establish an appropriate monitoring or production feed. Choose the mode for the job rather than assuming every function remains available at every maximum setting.

Timecode connects sound to the production

The timecode system uses a temperature-compensated oscillator with a specified accuracy of 0.2ppm. Its purpose is to help compatible cameras and recorders share a reliable timing reference, making separately captured material easier to align in the edit. For a documentary day with many short takes, that can reduce repetitive synchronisation work. Frame-rate settings, cabling and the wider timecode arrangement still need to be planned and tested. A clean camera reference, sensible scene naming and secure backups complement the timecode workflow rather than becoming unnecessary because it is present.

Power and connectivity for different working days

The F6 can operate from AA batteries, a compatible Sony L-series battery or USB power, giving a sound kit several practical power strategies. Its six-input, four-output USB interface mode extends the recorder into computer recording at supported rates up to 96kHz; compatible firmware and software are required for the intended format. Headphone and line-output facilities help integrate it with the rest of the production. For recordists who need multiple isolated sources and a disciplined route into post-production, the F6 offers an unusually compact way to keep both capture quality and working flexibility close at hand.
