Zoom F2 Field Recorder and Lavalier Mic

The Zoom F2 is a bodypack recorder built around a simple idea: put the microphone close to the speaker and record the sound locally. It is well suited to interviews, presentations, documentary work and video content where clear speech matters but a full wireless microphone system is unnecessary. The included LMF-2 lavalier microphone clips to clothing, while the small recorder can be carried by the person speaking. That keeps the microphone-to-mouth distance more consistent as the subject moves, helping the voice remain present in the recording.

Close microphone placement makes the difference

A lavalier can capture a stronger voice signal relative to the room than a camera microphone several metres away. The F2's included omnidirectional microphone is intended for this kind of close speech recording. Placement still requires care: clothing rubbing across the capsule, jewellery touching the cable or a jacket moving over the microphone can all become audible. Make a short test with the person speaking and moving naturally, then adjust the position before the real take. A little preparation can save a great deal of corrective editing afterwards.

Record changing voices with 32-bit float

The F2 records mono 32-bit float audio at 44.1kHz or 48kHz. This provides extensive level-adjustment latitude in compatible editing software, reducing the need to keep changing recording gain as a speaker becomes quieter or more animated. It is particularly useful when the recorder is being worn and is not easily accessible during the performance. The format cannot repair an overloaded microphone, wind disturbance or clothing noise, so a clean physical setup remains essential. Its value is the freedom to establish an appropriate recorded level after the event.

A locking input for a wearable setup

The 3.5mm microphone connection uses a locking arrangement to help keep the supplied microphone connected during use. That matters when the recorder is in a pocket or attached to a moving subject, where an ordinary loose plug could be disturbed. Route the cable with a little slack near the microphone and avoid leaving it under tension. For an interview, think about how the person will sit and turn; for a presentation, allow for natural movement. The recorder is most effective when its physical setup becomes unobtrusive to the person wearing it.

Local recording has a clear place in video production

The F2 records to its own microSD card. It is not a wireless audio transmitter, so the sound is retrieved from the recorder and aligned with the video during editing. A clear clap or another recognisable sync point can help when working without a timecode system. Recording locally avoids dependence on a radio link for the captured file, while also requiring a deliberate process for checking, collecting and backing up the audio. Label the recordings by person and take so that the small recorder remains part of an organised production workflow.

Two AAA batteries power portable operation, and USB connectivity supports file handling and compatible power arrangements. The F2 is the non-Bluetooth version; choose the F2-BT if supported wireless control and timecode functions are part of your plan. For solo filmmakers, interviewers and educators, the F2 offers a focused route to close-miked speech: a wearable recorder, an included lavalier and a file format that gives you useful level flexibility.
