The Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II turns sampling into a hands-on instrument. Capture a phrase, find its best moments and play a new beat before the original idea disappears. Its pressure-sensitive keys, large fader and animated display put performance at the centre of the process, while a self-contained design makes it equally useful on a studio desk or away from your main setup. This is the 128MB version of K.O. II.

Start with a sound, finish with a groove

Use the built-in microphone to capture a voice or everyday sound, or bring in a synthesiser, player or other line-level source through the stereo input. Samples can become drum hits, pitched melodies or longer musical phrases. Chopping gives you a practical way to rearrange an existing performance, moving individual slices onto the keys so that your fingers decide what happens next. The result is a workflow that encourages quick decisions and rewards experimentation.

The keys respond to velocity and pressure, so the same pattern can feel restrained, forceful or deliberately loose depending on how you play it. Record a performance in real time, tighten its timing where needed and build complementary parts across the four groups. Independent patterns let you keep a strong drum foundation while trying a different bass line or melodic phrase. You can develop variations without having to rebuild the whole idea each time.

Make the arrangement a performance

K.O. II's fader gives you a physical way to move the sound. Assign it to useful parameters and create changes you can hear immediately, from subtle tonal movement to a much more obvious transition. Send effects add space and character, while punch-in effects turn the keys into live performance controls. A restrained loop can become a breakdown, fill or new section with a few well-timed gestures.

The project and pattern structure supports more than short beat sketches. Build separate sections, move between ideas and use song mode to give a track a defined progression. Resampling provides another creative route: commit a sound or combination of parts, then treat that result as fresh material. It is an effective way to simplify a busy arrangement or deliberately take a performance in a less predictable direction.

Work alone or alongside your studio

The built-in speaker makes it easy to audition ideas without additional monitoring. Connect headphones or a mixer when you want to listen more closely, and use the MIDI and sync connections to bring other instruments into the session. USB-C provides power and a connection to a computer, making the EP-133 a practical addition to a larger production workflow as well as a standalone writing tool.

Current OS 2.5 adds USB audio recording and monitoring, reverse sample playback, adjustable recording sample rates and improvements to chopping and timestretching. These features require the appropriate firmware version. With battery operation for portable sessions and direct controls for the decisions you make most often, K.O. II suits producers who want to spend their time playing, sampling and shaping a track. Its appeal lies in how quickly those separate actions become one continuous creative process.
