THE SOUND OF A FINISHED RECORD

Bring the whole mix together.

Some compressors control level. The SSL Bus Compressor also shapes how a record feels: the drums settle into the track, instruments move together, and the mix gains a sense of cohesion. Bus Comp Classic brings that familiar response into a focused, hands-on rack unit, designed and built by SSL.

High-performance THAT 2181 VCAs work with SSL’s distinctive sidechain architecture, including a VCA in its feedback loop. The result is the musical movement and defined, controlled transients that make this circuit equally at home on a stereo mix, an instrument group or a drum bus.

Choose polished clarity, classic console richness or something much more assertive. Variable VCA Drive changes the harmonic character of the compressor, taking you from the clean response of SSL’s SuperAnalogue designs towards the colour of the FX384 and 4000 Series.

01 / CLEAN

SuperAnalogue clarity

At the cleanest setting, the VCAs operate in a balanced configuration for low distortion and a powerful transient response. Ideal when you want cohesion while keeping the mix open and precise.

02 / COLOUR

Classic console character

Engaging Drive switches the VCAs to an unbalanced configuration, introducing the harmonic behaviour associated with classic SSL designs. Dial in subtle richness or more audible analogue colour.

03 / DRIVE

Push the attitude

Turn Drive further for denser saturation and a more aggressive feel. With drive approaching 10% THD at the extreme, there is plenty of scope for assertive drums and creative parallel processing.

Precision six-position Ratio, Attack and Release controls make settings quick to find and straightforward to revisit. Expanded ratios and additional release settings give you more ways to shape the response, while retaining the immediacy of the classic SSL workflow.

SHAPE THE RESPONSE

From gentle glue to firm control

The 2:1 ratio uses an exceptionally gentle soft knee for progressive, transparent gain reduction. Higher ratios bring firmer control and greater density to stems, drum groups and parallel returns.

LET THE MUSIC LEAD

SSL Auto Release

The programme-dependent, two-stage Auto setting responds to changing material, allowing louder elements to recover more quickly and quieter material more gradually. A musical choice for complex, full mixes.

MODERN SIDECHAIN CONTROL

Keep the weight.
Control the reaction.

A six-position sidechain high-pass filter reduces the influence of bass-heavy material on the detector. A strong kick or bass line can keep its depth and impact without triggering excessive gain reduction across the rest of the mix.

The filter changes what the compressor responds to. It filters the sidechain signal, so you can adjust the compression behaviour without cutting low frequencies from the main audio path.

GENUINE STEREO EXTERNAL SIDECHAIN

The mix is approved.
Now print the stems.

Separate left and right external sidechain inputs support creative triggering and a useful stem-delivery workflow. Feed the complete mix into the sidechain while passing each individual stem through the main audio path, keeping the sidechain feed and compressor settings consistent for every pass.

Each stem follows the same mix-derived gain-reduction behaviour, helping preserve the balance and movement of the approved production across alternate versions and deliverables.
