The OptoFET from Rupert Neve Designs is a uniquely flexible analog compressor and wave-shaping tool designed for engineers who want far more than conventional dynamic control. By combining an all-new FET compressor with an optimized optical compressor in a single rack unit, OptoFET opens the door to an enormous range of tonal, dynamic, and creative possibilities.

At its core, OptoFET offers two distinct operating modes. In Dual Stage mode, the FET and OPTO compressors run in series, delivering precise, professional dynamic control using a classic studio technique that’s usually far more complex to set up. The order of the compressors can be flipped instantly, allowing you to decide whether fast, aggressive FET control hits first or whether the smoother optical stage leads the way.

Switch to Dual Band mode and OptoFET becomes something far more unconventional. A variable crossover lets you split the signal into low and high frequency bands, assigning one compressor to each band. This makes it possible to tightly control low-end energy while independently shaping mid and high frequencies — ideal for bass, drums, stems, or full mixes where traditional broadband compression falls short.

Both compressors are fully featured, with stepped attack, release, threshold, make-up gain, ratio selection, side-chain high-pass filtering, and parallel blend controls. The FET section delivers lightning-fast response and punch, while the OPTO section provides smoother, slower dynamics and rich low-order harmonics. Exclusive GRIT and BLOOM modes further expand the palette, transforming the compressors into harmonic shaping tools capable of subtle enhancement or bold sonic transformation.

With comprehensive gain staging, transformer-balanced outputs, and fully detented controls throughout, OptoFET is equally at home in tracking, mixing, mastering, live sound, and sound design.
