The Rupert Neve Designs 542 Tape Emulator Plug-in brings the saturation and transient shaping of the 542 hardware into your DAW. Developed with McDSP, it combines tape emulation, soft clipping and Silk harmonic processing for adding body and character to recordings, groups and full mixes.

Control the tape effect

Selectable 15 and 30 IPS modes offer different tonal responses. Adjust the drive and saturation for gentle thickening or a more pronounced effect, then use Blend to balance the tape-processed signal with the dry audio. Soft clipping engages at higher drive levels to round off peaks.

Shape the colour with Silk

Silk Red emphasises harmonics in the upper mids and highs, while Blue adds colour to the lows and low mids. Texture sets the intensity. The Silk stage follows the tape blend, so its effect remains independent of that control. True Mid/Side processing and input/output meters add flexibility beyond the original hardware.

Compatibility and licence

Supplied as a digitally delivered software licence. Supports AAX Native, AU and VST3 hosts, including Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Ableton Live, Reaper and Studio One. Runs natively on Intel and Apple silicon. An iLok account is required, with activation to a compatible iLok 2/3 USB key, a local computer or iLok Cloud. Two activations are included per licence. A USB iLok is not included.

RND lists macOS 10.13 through macOS 26 and Windows 10/11 support. Check the current installer availability and your DAW requirements before purchase.
