RME Digiface AES

The RME Digiface AES brings analogue recording, digital format connectivity and monitor control together in a compact USB 2.0 interface. With up to 14 inputs and 16 outputs, two microphone/line preamps, AES/EBU, coaxial S/PDIF and ADAT, it suits studios combining microphones, digital processors and external converters.

Analogue inputs and independent monitoring

The two front-panel XLR/TRS combination inputs use digitally controlled microphone/line preamps with a 75 dB gain range and independently switchable 48 V phantom power. Two balanced XLR outputs connect to active monitors or other line-level equipment, while the separate 6.35 mm headphone output provides an independent listening feed.

Digital connectivity with sample-rate conversion

AES/EBU and coaxial S/PDIF each provide stereo input and output. The optical ports operate as eight-channel ADAT at 44.1/48 kHz, four-channel ADAT at 88.2/96 kHz or two-channel ADAT at 176.4/192 kHz, and can alternatively be used for optical S/PDIF. Maximum simultaneous channel counts depend on sample rate and optical format.

The built-in stereo sample-rate converter can be assigned to the AES, coaxial S/PDIF or optical S/PDIF input. This lets a digital source running at a different sample rate join the system without changing the main clock. SteadyClock FS controls jitter, with synchronisation available from the internal clock or incoming digital audio.

TotalMix FX and standalone operation

TotalMix FX handles routing, monitor mixes, three-band parametric EQ and low-cut filtering. The front-panel colour display, encoder and dedicated buttons give direct access to device settings. Six stored setups allow quick recall, including when operating without a computer. MIDI input and output are available through the supplied breakout cable, and the optional ARC USB adds desktop control.

Flexible power and computer connectivity

Use USB bus power for a compact computer-based setup, or the included locking power supply for standalone operation. RME drivers support Windows and macOS, and Class Compliant mode enables compatible iPad workflows with suitable USB connectivity and power.
