Product overview
Stereo compression with control over punch, colour and movement
The Elysia Xpressor Neo 500 is an analogue Class-A stereo compressor that can handle restrained bus control and much more obvious dynamics effects. Its conventional threshold, attack, release and ratio controls are joined by parallel blending, sidechain filtering, Warm mode and Elysia's Gain Reduction Limiter.
The two-slot 500-series model brings the Neo compressor into a compatible powered chassis. It requires that chassis for power and audio connections, and includes the internal sidechain filter, parallel Mix and creative dynamics controls.
Choose how much of the attack comes through
Attack and release settings shape the feel of the compression. A slower attack can preserve more of the initial drum hit; a faster setting brings it under tighter control. Release determines how the gain recovers between hits and phrases, and can change whether a bus feels settled or deliberately pumping.
Auto Fast temporarily shortens the attack when a short, loud impulse demands it, then returns to the selected setting. This gives you another approach when a generally slower response sounds right but occasional transients need extra attention.
Two release curves for different material
The compressor offers linear and logarithmic release behaviour. Log Release provides a response that varies with the gain reduction and is useful for smooth recovery on more complex material. The linear mode offers a different movement that can suit dry, rhythmic sources and stronger effects.
Try the two curves with the same basic attack and threshold settings, then adjust the release time by ear. Listen to room decay, bass sustain and how the groove breathes after a loud hit rather than judging the gain-reduction meter alone.
Stop the low end dominating the detector
The variable sidechain high-pass filter reduces the influence of low frequencies on compression. It changes the detector signal, rather than removing bass from the audio path itself.
On a full mix, this can be useful when each kick hit pulls down the vocal or cymbals more than you want. Raise the sidechain filter gradually and compare the movement of the whole arrangement. Too much filtering can also make the compressor less responsive to low-end events that genuinely need control.
Limit the amount of compression
The Gain Reduction Limiter caps the amount of attenuation the compressor can apply. Threshold determines when compression begins; GRL establishes how far it can go. This is different from an output limiter and does not guarantee a fixed maximum recording level.
Use it to keep louder sections from being compressed much more heavily than quieter ones, or to contain an aggressive setting. It is particularly interesting alongside negative ratios, where an input increase above threshold can produce a lower output level. Those ratios invite dramatic rhythmic effects rather than routine levelling.
Parallel compression inside the unit
The Mix control blends the compressed and direct signals without requiring a separate parallel return. You can create a dense compressed sound and then bring back the original transient structure through the blend.
For a drum bus, establish the compressed character first, then reduce Mix until the energy and attack sit together. On a full mix, a gentler blend can add continuity while preserving more movement. Revisit make-up gain as you work so level changes do not dominate the comparison.
Warm mode offers a second response
Warm mode changes the behaviour of the output amplifier through slew-rate limiting, affecting harmonics, frequency balance and transients. It gives you a rounder alternative to the standard response without requiring a separate saturation processor.
Compare it after finding useful dynamics settings. It may help a sharp source feel more integrated, while another mix may benefit from the more immediate standard mode. The hardwire bypass makes checking the complete treatment straightforward.
Work from the musical purpose
Use the Xpressor Neo to establish the movement you want from a stereo source, then add its more specialised functions as needed. A bus that needs gentle continuity, a room pair that needs more excitement and an electronic loop built around pumping may call for very different combinations of the same controls.
Stereo bus compression in two slots
This format suits a compact stereo chain alongside other 500-series modules. Route the left and right signals through the module and check the return level before comparing bypass. External sidechain sockets are a feature of the 19-inch rack version, rather than this module.
