Product overview

From subtle harmonic weight to deliberate distortion

The Elysia Karacter Qube is a two-channel analogue saturation processor for developing the texture of instruments, stems and complete mixes. Drive, Color, Gain and Mix give you separate control over the intensity, character, level and blend of the effect, so adding colour does not have to mean committing the whole signal to heavy distortion.

The Qube version houses the two-channel processor in a powered desktop enclosure with balanced XLR and TRS connections. It offers standalone operation without a separate 500-series chassis.

Start with gentle saturation

In its standard mode, Karacter uses a soft, symmetrical saturation characteristic. At restrained settings this offers a way to add harmonic density to a bass, thicken a drum stem or make a clean instrument feel more substantial.

Drive determines how strongly the circuit is worked. Increase it until the change is easy to hear, then reassess the level and blend. Listen to low-end definition and the shape of the transients as well as the extra harmonics: those details reveal whether the processing is supporting the part.

FET Shred and Turbo Boost for stronger character

FET Shred changes the distortion to an asymmetrical, tube-inspired response. It opens up a more assertive range for synths, electric bass, drums and effects returns. Karacter uses solid-state circuitry; this mode is a tonal choice rather than a valve stage.

Turbo Boost is available with FET Shred engaged and pushes the distortion further, especially at higher Drive settings. It is useful for an obviously transformed sound: a broken drum loop, an aggressive synth layer or a parallel texture that would be too strong on its own.

Color changes the character of the distortion

The Color control shapes the harmonic balance of the saturation. It helps you explore different textures at a similar Drive setting, rather than using input level as your only creative variable.

For example, a distorted bass may need more definition without further flattening its attack. Experiment with Color, then return to Drive and Gain to establish the right intensity and output level. With a busy drum stem, judge the cymbals as well as the kick and snare; the same character setting can affect those elements quite differently.

Parallel blending keeps the original within reach

The Mix control blends the direct and processed signals inside the unit. This is particularly useful when strong saturation produces the right texture but takes too much away from the original note shape.

On drums, try building an obvious compressed-sounding texture through saturation, then reduce Mix until the dry attack returns to the foreground. On a vocal or instrument stem, a smaller processed contribution may give the part more presence without making the distortion itself the focus. Gain helps bring the processed level into a useful range for comparison.

Stereo, dual mono and Mid/Side operation

Karacter can process two separate mono sources, link its channels for stereo work, or use its internal Mid/Side matrix. In Mid/Side mode, one channel handles information shared between left and right, while the other handles their difference.

This lets you explore different colour in the centre and surrounding stereo information. A restrained treatment of the Mid can affect central weight and density; processing the Side can change the texture of ambience and wide elements. Check the stereo image and mono balance while experimenting, especially with stronger settings.

For conventional bus work, linked stereo operation provides a quick way to keep the treatment coordinated. Independent operation is useful when two unrelated mono sources need different sounds.

A creative processor for recording and mixing

Karacter is most useful when you have a clear sonic role in mind: extra weight, a more audible instrument in a dense arrangement, or an intentionally altered texture. Start with sensible line levels and use bypass comparisons throughout. A louder saturated signal can seem more exciting immediately, so level matching is essential when deciding how much character to keep.

Hands-on saturation wherever you work

Its compact enclosure makes it convenient beside an interface, synth setup or laptop-based studio. Use the analogue line connections for the audio path. This version includes the saturation and Mid/Side facilities, while the external CV connections belong to the 19-inch rack model.
