Product overview

D.W. FEARN · VT-9M

Bring the mix together.

The D.W. Fearn VT-9M pairs a Class-A valve audio path with pulse-width modulation compression. Designed for stereo mastering and mix-bus work, its stepped controls make it straightforward to refine a setting, document it and return to it when a session needs another pass.

STEREO MASTERINGPWM COMPRESSIONSTEPPED CONTROLS

Shape the movement

Control dynamics by ear.

Threshold, Attack and Release establish how the compressor responds. The Shape control then changes the character of the compression, moving between gentler behaviour and firmer control. It changes more than ratio alone, so it is a useful part of finding the response that suits the music.

Allow more of a drum transient through with a slower attack, or experiment with release to move between a more open result and greater density.

Keep the low end in perspective

Let the kick breathe.

Two sidechain high-pass filter settings reduce the compressor’s sensitivity to bass energy. On a bass-heavy mix, this can help prevent each kick hit from pulling down the whole programme. The filter acts on the detector signal, rather than cutting bass from the audio output.

The VU meter can show left output, right output, their sum or gain reduction. Switch to hard-wire bypass for a direct comparison while you judge the effect.

The Fearn signal path

Valve character. Modern gain control.

Eight 6072A valves provide the Class-A amplification, with transformer-balanced connections and PWM circuitry handling gain reduction. The combination gives you the Fearn valve signal path with a flexible, modern approach to compression.

Hand-built and individually tested, the VT-9M puts the essential controls on a single, clearly organised front panel. It is equally useful for a restrained finishing pass or a more audible change to a mix’s movement.
