B173 MKII draws on the character associated with classic 73-style preamps, using Cinemag transformers at the input and output. Its up-to-70 dB gain range provides flexibility with different microphones, from a close vocal to a lower-output source. The circuit gives you an analogue tonal decision at the recording stage, before EQ and compression enter the chain.

Find the balance between drive and level

Stepped input gain and a separate output control let you explore how hard the preamp is working while keeping the outgoing level appropriate for your converter. Start with a clean setting, then increase drive if the part calls for more density or harmonic character. Matching the output level makes those comparisons more meaningful.

Useful beyond microphones

The instrument DI input brings the same preamp into direct guitar, bass and keyboard recording. Phantom power and polarity reverse support everyday microphone work, and the balanced TRS output connects to a compatible line input. This makes the unit useful both as a primary vocal channel and as a character option beside an existing interface.
