FET control and optical levelling

B172A combines a FET compressor section with a valve optical compressor section. Each brings a different response to the signal: the FET section can address fast peaks, while optical compression offers another way to shape the longer movement of a performance. Having both available encourages you to choose the circuit around the source.

Build a serial chain inside one unit

Serial routing lets you place either section first. Catch transients with the FET stage before applying optical levelling, or reverse the order and listen to how the second stage reacts to an already shaped signal. Changing the sequence can be as significant as changing a ratio or time setting.

Two independent processing paths

The sections can also operate independently for dual-mono work. That gives you two different compressors for separate sources in the same session. They are distinct designs rather than a matched stereo pair; stereo-link facilities are intended for use with another compatible unit when the application calls for it.

A practical outboard combination

XLR and TRS connections help integrate the 2U unit with studio equipment. B172A is well suited to a rack where space is limited but different compression behaviours are valuable. It can serve as a dedicated serial vocal chain on one project and two independent processors on the next, without changing the hardware available in the room.
