The AEA R84 is a passive big-ribbon microphone with a smooth, full-range sound and classic figure-8 pickup. Its natural transient response, generous low end and forgiving upper frequencies make it a versatile studio microphone for vocals, brass, strings, guitar cabinets, drum overheads and room capture.

Its ribbon transducer is intended to capture transients and upper frequencies smoothly, making it a useful alternative to condenser microphones on sources that can otherwise become hard or overly bright.
