IGS Audio Photon 500
500 Series Mono Optical Compressor
The classic LA3A/LA4 sound - now in your 500 series rack.
The Photon 500 from IGS Audio is an optical compressor, based on technology from the 60's, first used in the UREI LA-2A limiter and later in the LA4. As an homage to these legendary products, IGS packed this technology into a single-slot 500-series module.
The Photon 500 has an electronically balanced input with 2520 compatible op-amp in the gain stage. The output is balanced by a Carnhill transformer.
The Photon 500 uses an opto-coupler, which introduces negative feedback in the audio path, taking care of gain reduction, being the basics of all compression.
The Photon has just two knobs, Peak Reduction and Output. Peak reduction control the amount of compression the Photon will apply to your signal, and Output adjusts the amount of make-up gain added to the signal after compression.
There are also four switches on the Photon 500. The Ratio switch has 3 positions, letting you switch between 2:1, 4:1 and 12:1. This gives you more control than the original LA3A/LA4 compressors.
The Bypass switch allows you to compare your signal wet vs dry.
The Sidechain switch lets you apply a HPF to the detector of the Photon, to prevent the bass end causing over compression and pumping. The Sidechain has 3 setting, FLAT, 60Hz and 120Hz. The final switch is MODE, this works similarly to SLAM on the IGS Alter and 576. London Mode gives you smooth Opto compression, whereas New York mode adjusts the compression curve/knee yielding a more aggressive tone.
